Man, I totally feel like Godzilla right now, Amber said as our walker crested the water and began its trek inland. Just imagine if you and I were on the big screen. The whole audience would be on the edge of their seats, watching us about to march through the city, thinking we’re sweet as. Doesn’t get much better than that, does it?

I couldn’t help but chuckle at the image. Would be nice, but we’re a little short.

Nah, yeah, guess you’re right, she said. But honest to G, he’d make all this a piece of piss though, right?

True, I admitted. But it depends on which version we got, after all. He was the bad guy in a number of movies.

He was? Amber asked, sounding surprised. Aw, that sucks. Not really looking at him turning me into a feed, you know? Still, it’d be nice to otherwise, and as long as I’m thinking about it, what if we got a whole slew of monsters? King Kong. Mothra. That giant whatever thing from Cloverfield. We’d have this war wrapped up by Christmas.

That would be nice.

Damn right. Give you some time to get me something special, too.

I couldn’t help but grin. I’ll get you something special, regardless. Don’t worry.

Going to hold you to that, mate.

At this point, we were barely waist high, wading through the water, waves crashing against the back of our hips. Ahead, Coney Island presented us with ruined skyscrapers, crumbling buildings, and the remains of its famous amusement park. Nearly everything from the latter had long been erased from the surface of the planet, but the historic wooden roller coaster, The Cyclone, still stood mostly intact as it was only missing a large section from one of its main turns. The park’s Ferris wheel had somehow survived as well, though the lights in the middle hung loose, and the entire thing tilted at such an odd angle that if it fell from a wayward sneeze, I wouldn’t have been surprised.

I’d never been to the park, but I knew many who had. I even knew a few that if they were still alive today and saw the state it was in, would lose their minds either to grief or rage—possibly both.

With that last thought in mind, I gave what I’d considered to be an unexpected order to Amber. Hey, if we’re still around here when the demons come, try not to obliterate what’s left of the park.

Nah, yeah…way ahead of you on that one, Captain, Amber said. Always wanted to come here. Still deluding myself that one day I will.

Check. Hopefully, we’ll clear the area. Not seeing anything at the moment. Are you?

That’s a negative, she replied. Besides, you know our sensors will spot the baddies before we do.

At that point, I opened up our general comms and radioed in. “Little Hen, this is Big Red,” I said. “We’re at the insertion point. What’s your status?”

“Seas are a little rough. Lead ACVs just went
